There are 259 National Highways on the basis of their route numbers. Roads carry about 70% of the freight traffic and about 85% of the passenger traffic in the country. National Highways carry about 40% of the entire vehicular traffic in the country. Traffic on the roads is growing 7% to 10% per annum.
The roadways provide transportation to millions of people every day. However, vast sections of the country's road network, especially in rural areas, are in a process of development. The government of India has been continuously developing the linking roads between four major cities. The minor roads in villages and small towns across the country are also in a process of development.
